Quealy Campbell & Christine Pinot Noir 2022

Quealy Campbell & Christine Pinot Noir is a concentrated single-vineyard Pinot from the Balnarring coastal plain.

Stylistically this sits at the muscular, concentrated end of Mornington Pinot Noir, and 2022's low yields pushed it further that way, so Tom McCarthy went gently in the cellar. Different clones came in on 9 and 16 March; the destemmed fruit spent 21 days fermenting in small vats before a soft press to puncheons, about a fifth new, for fourteen months. The vineyard is a north-facing, exposed block 30 metres above sea level, planted in 1994 to mostly MV6 on alluvial clay and the red soils that wash down from Red Hill, a combination that gives small glossy bunches and a great deal of flavour per berry.

Dense but not heavy: black cherry, dried herb, a whiff of earth, and tannin with real grip. Give it time or decant. Sixteen degrees. Roast lamb, duck with cherries, or slow-cooked beef with mushrooms and thyme.
