Description
Quealy Feri Maris Pinot Grigio is a single-block Grigio from the oldest vines at the organic Balnarring home vineyard.
One block of the estate's oldest vines, planted in 1996, supplies the whole wine: mature, dry-grown plants in shallow clay, cropping lightly, which is most of the reason it has the presence it does. The name is Latin for wild sea. Balnarring's climate brings flavour early, so picking can happen with freshness in mind, and the grapes came off at 11.9 Baumé. Whole-bunch pressing gave only 580 litres per tonne. After settling overnight, the juice fermented naturally in 25 per cent new wood for four weeks before going back to steel, resting on gross lees without stirring to hold a steely profile. Nothing added, nothing filtered.
Deeper and more mineral than the other Grigios in the range, with pear, lemon oil, ginger and a firm, salty finish. Serve at 10 degrees, in a white-wine glass. Roast chicken, grilled prawns, or a plate of pecorino and pear.
