Quealy Musk Creek Chardonnay 2022

Quealy Musk Creek Chardonnay is a single-vineyard Chardonnay from a high, cool block at Main Ridge.

Chardonnay was a long time coming to this address, and it arrived when Tom McCarthy took over the day-to-day winemaking. He had already spent years with the variety at his own project, Kerri Greens, and this is Mornington, where Chardonnay is the other half of the story. The source is a one-hectare plot at Main Ridge, planted in 1997 by his parents, Kevin McCarthy and Kathleen Quealy: 150 metres up, cool, late-ripening, low-cropping, on the red soils of the region. Fruit was hand-picked in the last days of March and pressed as whole bunches directly to barrel, 13 per cent new, with full solids. The wine was moved as little as possible and the lees stirred twice all up.

Grapefruit, white peach and a flinty, savoury edge, with fleshy mid-palate weight and a tight mineral finish. Serve at 12 degrees in a large glass. Roast chicken, scallops, or a leek and parmesan tart suit it well.
