Quealy Musk Creek Chardonnay 2023

Quealy Musk Creek Chardonnay is a dry-grown single-vineyard Chardonnay from Main Ridge.

The second vintage of a wine that took three decades to appear in the range. The plot is a hectare of dry-grown vines high at Main Ridge, planted in 1997 by Kevin McCarthy and Kathleen Quealy, sitting at 150 metres on the deep red soils of the ridge: cool, late and reliably low-yielding. Hand-picked at the end of March, pressed as bunches to barrel with full solids, 30 per cent of it new, and then left largely alone, with Tom McCarthy moving the wine as little as he could and stirring the lees sparingly to chase the mineral side of the fruit. Small bunches and small berries meant flesh was never going to be a problem.

Citrus, nectarine and toasted nut over a taut, chalky line, with texture from the solids and a long dry finish. Twelve degrees, in a big glass. Serve with roast chicken, grilled crayfish, or a mushroom and taleggio risotto.
