Quealy Musk Creek Chardonnay 2024

Quealy Musk Creek Chardonnay is a concentrated single-vineyard Chardonnay from a short Mornington vintage.

Three releases in, this has become a fixture. The fruit grows on a half-hectare of dry-grown vines at Main Ridge, planted in 1997 by Kevin McCarthy and Kathleen Quealy, 150 metres up on red volcanic soils, cool enough to ripen weeks after the Balnarring blocks. Another poor flowering in 2024 left small bunches and small berries with a great deal of concentration in them. Picking came mid-March; whole bunches went to barrel with full solids for fermentation, around 30 per cent of those barrels new, and Tom McCarthy again moved the wine as little as possible to coax out the mineral character.

Concentrated and fine, with lemon curd, white peach, hazelnut and a flinty, saline close. Real length. Serve at 12 to 13 degrees. Roast chicken, pan-fried snapper, or a tart of leek and gruyère all work beside it.
