Description
Quealy Musk Creek Pinot Gris is a single-vineyard Gris from dry-grown, own-rooted vines at Main Ridge.
North-north-east is the aspect, 180 to 210 metres the elevation, and basalt-derived volcanic soil the medium: the dry-grown, own-rooted vines here went in during 1997 and ripen weeks after the estate's coastal blocks. The Bass Strait breeze that runs across the ridge is the reason the acidity holds. Bunches are tiny and pink, which concentrates everything. Pressing is deliberately slow in the Alsatian manner, with whole bunches given six hours and only the most delicate phenolics taken, and the juice then splits between stainless steel and barrel for a wild ferment. The high, cool sites are where the Gris comes from; the Grigio stays down on the warm flats.
Nashi pear, quince and a spicy, faintly honeyed centre with good phenolic grip and a dry mineral close. There is real weight here. Ten to eleven degrees. Serve with roast pork belly, smoked trout, or a plate of comté and walnuts.
