Description
Quealy Musk Creek Pinot Gris is a barrel-influenced single-vineyard Gris from the Mornington Peninsula.
Altitude is the whole distinction between the estate's Gris and its Grigio: the Gris hangs into late autumn on high ground and comes in headier and fuller-bodied, while the warmer Balnarring blocks give the racier Grigio. This fruit is all estate-grown on basalt-derived volcanic soil, on a north-north-east slope 180 to 210 metres above Western Port, planted in 1997, dry-grown and own-rooted. Hand-harvested bunches are pressed slowly over six hours to capture only the finest phenolics, then racked, with three-quarters of the juice fermenting in stainless steel and the rest going to French oak.
Pear, tangerine and wild honey with a spicy mineral thread and a grippy, dry finish. It drinks more like a light white Rhône than a supermarket Gris. Serve at 10 to 11 degrees. Roast chicken, pork and fennel, or a soft washed-rind cheese.
