Quealy Musk Creek Pinot Gris 2024

Quealy Musk Creek Pinot Gris is a dry single-vineyard Gris grown 200 metres up on Main Ridge.

Two hundred metres up on the ridge, on a north-north-east slope of basalt-derived volcanic soil, the dry-grown and own-rooted vines here were planted in 1997 and look out over Western Port and the heads. The breeze off Bass Strait never really stops, which is why the tiny pink bunches hold such good acidity. Pressing runs six slow hours in the Alsatian style, and after racking, four-fifths of the juice ferments in stainless steel while the remainder goes to French puncheons, half of them new, to build weight and structure. Stirring was kept to a minimum throughout.

A riot of pink and red fruits with wild honey, slicks of spice and a mineral, long finish. Textured and dry. Serve at 10 to 11 degrees. Good with roast pork, a duck salad with orange, or a plate of taleggio and pear.
