Quealy Musk Creek Pinot Noir 2021

Quealy Musk Creek Pinot Noir is a single-vineyard, light-bodied Pinot Noir from Main Ridge on the Mornington Peninsula.

Main Ridge sits at the cool, high end of the Peninsula, and the vines here, mostly MV6 put in the ground in 1997 by Kevin McCarthy and Kathleen Quealy, ripen later than anything else in the family holdings. Getting Pinot across the line at this address takes small crops and constant attention in the canopy. The 2021 was fermented in three separate batches, each with a different share of whole bunches, and plunged by hand twice daily with a light enough touch that the intact bunches could keep fermenting inside their own skins. Pressed and settled, it went into François Frères and Billon hogsheads and barriques, a quarter of them new, with its fine lees for company.

Red cherry and rhubarb sit over a leafy, spice-edged undertow, with fine tannin and acidity holding the line. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees. Roast quail, a mushroom risotto or a plate of jamon will all find their place alongside it.
