Description
Quealy Musk Creek Pinot Noir is a wild-fermented, unfiltered Pinot Noir from high ground at Main Ridge.
Small crops are normal on this ridge, but 2024 was smaller again, the bunches tight and concentrated by the time picking came around. Planted in 1997 and never irrigated, the mature MV6 vines sit at 150 metres in deep red clay, sharing their four hectares with Pinot Gris and a little Muscat Rouge à Petits Grains and Chardonnay. Fermentation was spontaneous and unhurried, better than twenty-eight days on skins in two-tonne open fermenters with the lightest of plunging and a gentle press. The wine then rested on full lees in French hogsheads, one quarter new, and was bottled in May 2025 with no fining and no filtration.
Dark cherry, pressed violets and woodsy spice, with acid drawn tight and a long pull of fine, suede-like tannin. Serve at 15 degrees. Try it with roast duck, veal with wild mushrooms, or a slow-cooked shoulder of lamb.
