Quealy Pobblebonk Field Blend 2020

Quealy Pobblebonk Field Blend is a textural Mornington Peninsula white built on Friulano with Riesling, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay.

The pobblebonk frogs that name this wine are thriving in the dams and wetlands around the Balnarring vineyard, which tells you something about how the place is farmed. The blend is the clearest window into the Friuli thinking that runs through this range. Cool 2020 pushed the Chardonnay, five per cent, and the Pinot Grigio, fourteen, back to a 19 March pick, and both were barrel-fermented in older puncheons on full solids. Friulano at seventy per cent and Riesling at eleven came in roughly a month later, were stomped and left on skins overnight, then pressed. The tank was racked the next day and the barrel lot pumped in over the top, making a co-ferment of sorts.

Quince, lemon curd and dried herbs with a chalky, faintly savoury finish. Pull it from the fridge ten minutes before pouring and serve around 11 degrees. It handles roast chicken, pork and fennel sausages, or a bowl of clams with white wine and chilli.
