Quealy Pobblebonk Field Blend 2023

Quealy Pobblebonk Field Blend is a barrel-fermented white blend of Riesling, Friulano and Chardonnay from Balnarring.

After a year off, the wine came back in 2023 leaning squarely on the oldest white vines at the home block. Riesling and Chardonnay went in there in 1982, and the Friulano was grafted in 2007 onto Chardonnay planted in 1996. The mix landed at half Riesling, thirty-one per cent Friulano and nineteen Chardonnay, each variety picked and fermented on its own with indigenous yeasts, in barrel with full solids and seventeen per cent of the wood new. Blending came afterwards, and bottling followed with no fining. Tom McCarthy rates it among the better versions he has made, and the inter-varietal harmony backs him up.

Yellow flowers, sun-warmed stone fruit and a nutty kernel edge, the palate balancing fleshy citrus pith against savoury detail and a lick of coastal salt. Serve at 11 degrees. Salt-baked snapper, chicken schnitzel or a sharp goat cheese all suit.
