Description
Quealy Pobblebonk Field Blend is an organically grown white blend of Riesling, Friulano, Pinot Grigio and Ribolla Gialla from the Mornington Peninsula.
Every variety in the 2024 came off the family's organically managed Balnarring estate: Riesling at forty-three per cent, Friulano thirty-one, Pinot Grigio twenty-three and a sliver of Ribolla Gialla. The vine ages tell the story of the block, with Riesling and Chardonnay dating to 1982, Friulano grafted onto 1996 Chardonnay roots in 2007, and the Ribolla only in the ground since 2018. Each parcel fermented separately with wild yeasts in old barrels on full solids, then went to blend and to bottle with neither fining nor filtration. Another short crop on the Peninsula, and Tom McCarthy took the concentration it delivered as fair compensation.
Meadow flowers and sunny citrus up front, then nutty, savoury weight underneath, with pithy grip and real freshness through the close. Serve around 11 degrees. Think grilled calamari, a prosciutto and rocket pizza, or pork cutlet with apple.
