Quealy Seventeen Rows Pinot Noir 2022

Quealy Seventeen Rows Pinot Noir is an organically grown, old-vine Pinot Noir from the Balnarring home vineyard.

Winemaking was unusually simple in 2022. Everything went into one 2.5-tonne stainless vat, fully destemmed, and was plunged by hand roughly once a day and twice only at the height of fermentation, then pressed lightly into French hogsheads split evenly between new, one and two-year-old wood. There it sat untouched for a little over twelve months before racking, eight weeks of rest in stainless steel, and bottling. The fruit comes from seventeen surviving rows of MV6 planted in 1982 on the north-facing slope at Balnarring, shallow loam over clay, certified organic since 2019, which remain the oldest Pinot Noir vines in the family's care.

Dark cherry and blood orange over a savoury base of earth and dried herb, with tannin that is fine-grained and persistent. Fifteen degrees. Good with duck confit, mushroom and thyme pasta, or a slow-roasted lamb shoulder.
