Description

Quealy Turbul Friulano is an amphora-fermented, skin-contact white made from Friulano grown at Balnarring.

Friulano, once called Tocai Friulano, reached Australia in the 1970s, and the cuttings behind this wine trace back to the Mildura vineyard of Slovenian émigré Denis Pasut. They were grafted over a block of 1996 Chardonnay at Balnarring as early as 2003. The variety demands low yields and constant attention, and Tom McCarthy is candid about how much work it takes for the reward it gives. His inspiration came from his father's skin-fermented 2008 Claudius and from time spent in northern Italy. In 2020, the ripest estate fruit fermented wild on skins in 800-litre terracotta amphorae for four months with no added sulphur, stirred daily, then basket-pressed at the end of winter and raised in used puncheons for thirteen months.

Waxy, deep and savoury, with lemon curd, dried apricot and a tannic pull that makes it behave more like a light red. Serve at 13 degrees. Roast chicken, a pork and sage ragu, or a board of aged cheeses would all be at home.
