Description
Quealy Turbul Friulano is a long-macerated Friulano from the estate's Balnarring vineyard on the Mornington Peninsula.
One hundred and forty-one days is how long the 2021 sat on skins in 800-litre terracotta amphorae, wild-fermented with no sulphur and stirred by hand every day. Basket pressing came on the first day of spring, and only at that point did a tiny sulphur addition go in. The wine then spent a further twelve months in puncheons, a fifth of them new, before bottling without fining or filtration. The Friulano itself was grafted onto 1996 Chardonnay in 2003 from cuttings sourced in Mildura, and the variety asks for small crops and patience in return for its texture and its dry, herbal length.
Honeyed lemon, green almond and dried fennel, the palate broad and grippy with real drive underneath. Twelve to 13 degrees, in a generous glass. It stands up to grilled quail, pork belly with fennel seed, or a bowl of chickpeas with chorizo.
