Description
Quealy Turbul Friulano is a skin-contact Friulano raised in terracotta and old oak at Balnarring on the Mornington Peninsula.
Three vessels did the work in 2023: two 800-litre terracotta amphorae and one of 300 litres. The ripest Friulano on the estate was destemmed and left to ferment spontaneously on skins, then sat undisturbed until the first day of spring, when it was basket-pressed with a small sulphur addition. From there it went into two used puncheons for a full eighteen months before bottling, unfined and unfiltered. Another low-cropping year of real quality, and the extended time in wood has given the wine a broader, deeper frame than the shorter-raised vintages that came before it.
Fleshy and deep, with citrus, sage, quince and complex floral character, the texture tighter than the weight suggests thanks to ripe acid and chewy phenolics. Serve at 13 degrees, decanted. It is good over two days, and good with roast chicken, pork loin, or a plate of aged pecorino.
