Quealy Turbul Malvasia 2022

Quealy Turbul Malvasia is a skin-fermented Malvasia Istriana from the estate's smallest planting at Balnarring.

Three rows of vines are all there is, which makes this the smallest varietal planting on the property. Malvasia Istriana earns its keep in Friuli by lending weight and aromatic intensity, and it does the same job on the Mornington Peninsula. Fermentation ran in a small one-tonne steel tank, and the wine stayed put there until spring arrived, at which point the wine was pressed off skins and only the soft pressings were moved to seasoned barrels. Bottling came in February, unfined and unfiltered. Controlled exposure to oxygen across that long, slow raising is what holds the wine together at very low sulphur, with free SO2 sitting around 1.5 grams per hectolitre.

Rich gold, teeming with sweet citrus, bruised red apple, honey blossom and a frangipani-and-biscuit lift. The palate is full and mouthcoating, cut by sweet-citrus acidity, with an oxidative nutty richness through a long finish. Serve at 13 degrees with roast pork or a hard cheese.
