Quealy Tussie Mussie Pinot Gris 2021

Quealy Tussie Mussie Pinot Gris is a fruit-driven, dry Pinot Gris from a single vineyard at Merricks North.

There may be no better vineyard name in the country, and it comes from the property's past life as a rose farm: a tussie mussie is an old word for a small bouquet. Planted in 2007 and managed by the Quealy team, its 3.5 acres of Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir sit in the deep red volcanic clays that Peninsula growers prize most. The site faces north at 120 to 150 metres, sheltered and warm, and between that and the relative youth of the vines the Gris comes out exuberantly fruity. Whole bunches were pressed over six hours at low pressure in the Alsatian manner, free-run only, mostly steel with a fifth in French oak, and lees-stirred until November.

Ripe pear, nectarine and a dab of ginger spice, with lees-derived weight and a dry, clean finish. Serve at 10 degrees. Try it with pork and apple, a chicken and leek pie, or soft cheeses on toast.
