Quealy Tussie Mussie Pinot Gris 2023

Quealy Tussie Mussie Pinot Gris is a dry, textured single-vineyard Pinot Gris from Merricks North.

Picking was done in two passes, late March and early April, and the berries arrived small, glossy and packed with flavour. Whole bunches were pressed on a long cycle, then fermented mostly in tank with about a tenth in barrel and some solids left in, followed by seven months on lees. The three hectares of Pinot Noir and Gris here sit in deep red volcanic clay, and the combination of northerly location and north-facing aspect slows ripening down, which is how the wine keeps its natural acidity while the flavours build. Nothing about 2023 suggests a difficult year for Peninsula whites.

Flush with fleshy stone fruit, flowers and spice, with a lick of marine salinity, seamless texture and a long, powerfully flavoured close. Serve at 10 degrees. Roast pork belly, grilled chicken with lemon, or a plate of scallops would all sit happily with it.
