Quinta da Muradella Monterrei Gorvia Blanco 2018

Gorvia Blanco is José Luis Mateo's biodynamic white from a single 1.2-hectare slate vineyard in the Monterrei DO of inland Galicia.

Monterrei lies on the Portuguese border in the south-east corner of Galicia, a sheltered valley warmer and drier than the Atlantic appellations to the west, and long overlooked by the wider trade. Mateo has worked here for close to three decades and has become one of north-west Spain's most respected growers, assembling a collection of old, dry-grown parcels and replanting some varieties with massale cuttings taken from the ancient A Trabe mountain vineyard. Gorvia sits near Monterrei Castle in the north-western Pazo de Monterrei subzone, a slope of iron-rich slate and schist at 400 metres, farmed on biodynamic principles. The white is made almost entirely from Doña Blanca, a local variety capable of real structure when yields are low. It is fermented in mature 1,500-litre oak foudres, roughly a third of the fruit on skins, then aged in barrel with partial malolactic fermentation for eleven months, after which the wine rests two winters in stainless steel before bottling.

Already expressive but worth five to eight years in the cellar. Try it with roast chicken, grilled octopus or a mature hard cheese; serve at 10-12°C.
