Quinta do Noval Tawny Port Colheita 1995

Quinta do Noval Tawny Port Colheita is a single-year tawny held far longer in cask than the seven years the category requires.

The Portuguese word colheita means harvest, and a Colheita Port must come from a single year and spend a minimum of seven years in wood before bottling. In practice many are held much longer, so the style varies widely from house to house. Quinta do Noval, in the Cima Corgo above the Pinhão valley, makes a Colheita only in exceptional years, setting aside lots with the structure to take long cask ageing and raising them in cascos, old 640-litre casks that allow slow oxidative development and gradual evaporation. When the house judges a wine ready, usually after about fifteen years, part of the stock is bottled and the remainder is left in barrel for future releases. The grapes are the traditional Douro field blend rather than a named single variety.

Drinking beautifully now with no rush, and it will hold for weeks once opened. Try it with almond tart, aged Gouda or dark chocolate, lightly chilled at 14-16°C.
