Ravensworth Barbera & Nebbiolo 2024

Ravensworth Barbera & Nebbiolo is a medium-bodied red blend of Barbera and Nebbiolo grown in the Hilltops region.

Langhe rosso is the reference point, the everyday red that Piemontese locals drink by the litre, and Bryan Martin has made his own version from fruit at the Bit of Heaven and Grove vineyards in Hilltops. The 2024 runs eighty-five per cent Barbera to fifteen Nebbiolo, off vines rooted in duplex soils of clay over shale. Both parcels fermented as whole berries for three to four weeks in small open-top vessels, and were then racked to old barriques for eleven months. Martin spent fifteen years at Clonakilla before building Ravensworth up in Murrumbateman, and his Italian bottlings have been among the most convincing in the country.

Sour cherry and plum with a savoury, gently tarry edge, bright acidity and enough tannin to hold a rich dish. Serve at 16 degrees. An autumn braise is the obvious call, though it is just as good with a bowl of ragu or a plate of salami.
