Description
Ravensworth Tumbarumba Chardonnay is a full-bodied Chardonnay from two high-altitude vineyards in Tumbarumba.
Years of tinkering with fermentation and maturation have gone into settling the house Chardonnay style, and it has arrived somewhere distinctly its own. The fruit comes from Mountain View and Glenburnie, both run by Johansen Wines: Glenburnie at 710 metres on basalt and iron-rich soils, Mountain View at 760 metres on granite and quartz. Grapes were held on skins for eight to twenty-four hours, then went to press and into demi-muids and foudre to ferment. Those demi-muids were deliberately left untopped, which is where the nutty, saline thread in the finished wine comes from. Twelve months later the parcels were blended and bottled.
Not a conventional Australian Chardonnay: white peach and lemon sit under a nutty, saline, faintly oxidative layer, with a dry and mineral finish. Serve at 12 degrees. Roast chicken, scallops, or a mushroom and gruyere tart will all meet it well.
