Description
Robert Weil Kiedrich Gräfenberg Grosses Gewächs Riesling is the estate's dry flagship, drawn from its oldest vines on a historic Rheingau slope.
Kiedrich Gräfenberg, the hill of the counts, has been used to designate Robert Weil's finest wines since the site was classified as Weinlage 1 Klasse in 1867. It holds the estate's oldest vines, up to 80 years of age and mostly on their own rootstock, and Wilhelm Weil chose to source his Grosses Gewächs from this site alone, though he could release three from his single vineyards. The wine was raised for 12 months on lees in large, neutral Doppelstückfass casks from Stockinger, yet shows no trace of wood, which gives some idea of the concentration of the base material. In spite of its intensity it has stunning clarity and eye-of-the-needle precision, with effortless power and depth carried lightly, and it will hold longer than almost anything else in the region.
Drinkable now with air, but its real span runs two or three decades. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork belly, smoked eel or mature Comté.
