Robert Weil Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese 2020

Robert Weil's Gräfenberg Spätlese is a naturally sweet Riesling from the estate's finest vineyard, a grand cru site in all but name.

Australia tends to focus on the dry wines of the Rheingau, but Weil is regarded as one of the great producers of the sweeter Prädikat styles, and Stuart Pigott has gone as far as to ask where the region's tradition of high-end Riesling dessert wines would be without Wilhelm Weil's work in the style. Much of the reason lies in the mountainous, rocky setting of the Kiedricher Berg vineyards. Gräfenberg is steep and stony, with thin soils over phyllite slate, and it holds warmth into the autumn while the altitude and airflow keep nights cool; that combination allows fruit to be picked at Spätlese ripeness without losing the acidity that keeps sweetness from cloying. Grapes are selected by hand in successive passes, pressed gently and fermented slowly, and the ferment is left to stop with natural residual sugar in the wine.

Lovely young and capable of twenty years or more, it works with fruit tarts, foie gras, mild blue cheese or spiced Asian dishes. Serve at 8-10°C.
