Robert Weil Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese 2021

Robert Weil Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese is a naturally sweet Riesling from the Rheingau's most celebrated single site.

Gräfenberg rises steeply above the village of Kiedrich on phyllite, a metamorphosed slate, and it has been the heart of the Weil estate since the 1860s. The Rheingau's reputation for sweet Riesling was built on wines of exactly this kind, harvested late and left with their natural sugar rather than fermented dry. Weil's picking teams, which can number seventy at harvest, work through the slope repeatedly to take fruit at the right moment; the grapes for this Spätlese were harvested without botrytis influence, which keeps the wine clear-cut rather than honeyed. The analysis tells the story of the balance: 9% alcohol, 9.1 g/L acidity and 88.5 g/L residual sugar, so the sweetness is held in tension by the acidity rather than sitting on top of the wine. The result is light on its feet despite the sugar, with the chiselled mineral line the site is known for.

It can be drunk now and will develop for twenty years or more; serve at 8–10°C as an aperitif or with Thai and Sichuan dishes, or with a fruit tart.
