Robert Weil Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Trocken 2021

Robert Weil Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Trocken comes from a 3.8-hectare monopole that the estate had reinstated as a separate vineyard in 2005.

The name Turmberg, or tower hill, refers to the last surviving tower of Burg Scharfenstein, a twelfth-century castle that stands above the vineyard at Kiedrich in the Rheingau. The German wine law of 1971 absorbed the site into neighbouring Gräfenberg, but Weil argued successfully for its restoration to the vineyard register, since it had historically been a separate parcel with its own terroir. The vines are between 30 and 50 years old. The base is phyllite rock, a metamorphosed slate, with only thin topsoil, which gives fruit of greater mineral voltage and a racier profile than the deeper-soiled Klosterberg — the difference, roughly, between a fine Saint-Aubin and a fine Chassagne. Although Turmberg qualifies for Grosse Lage status, Weil chooses to bottle it as an Erste Lage, reserving the top classification for Gräfenberg. The wine was raised entirely in doppelstückfass for ten months.

Drink it over the next ten to fifteen years, with pork belly, grilled trout or a mushroom risotto. Serve at 10–12°C.
