Description
This is Robert Weil's village-level dry Riesling, drawn from across the estate's holdings in Kiedrich.
Kiedrich is a small wine village in the Rheingau hills above Eltville, and Robert Weil has been its dominant estate since 1875. The Kiedricher Trocken sits a step above the regional Rheingau bottling and a step below the single-vineyard wines, and it is built from younger-vine material together with the first-picked parcels from the classified hillside sites of Klosterberg, Turmberg and Gräfenberg, with a measure of Wasseros fruit as well. Drawing the earliest pickings from the top slopes keeps acidity high and the alcohol moderate, which is exactly what this style needs. One-third of the wine was raised for six months in large Stockinger doppelstßckfass, the traditional oval cask of the region, with the remainder kept in stainless steel; the wood adds a little breadth and lees texture without any noticeable oak character. It is dry in the German sense, with the fruit doing the work rather than any residual sugar.
Ready on release and good for five or six years, it suits grilled fish, schnitzel or a simple salad of prawns. Serve at 10-12°C.
