Description
Robert Weil Kiedricher Riesling Trocken is the estate's village wine, blended from first-picked fruit off the classified hillside sites.
Kiedrich sits in the eastern Rheingau below the Taunus hills, and Weil's holdings there run across three classified slopes. This wine takes the first-picked parcels from Klosterberg, Turmberg and Gräfenberg, together with a measure of Wasseros fruit, which is why it stands clearly above the estate's entry bottling: more texture, more power and considerably more rocky, mineral intensity. To match that weight, one-third of the wine is raised for six months in large Stockinger doppelstückfass, the traditional oval casks of the region, with the remainder kept in steel. The cask portion adds breadth rather than oak character, and the wine ends up pulpy and citrus-driven but carried by a tangy, mineral freshness, skating across the palate rather than sitting on it. It is an accurate, unshowy statement of what the Kiedrich hillside gives.
Drink it over the next eight years with grilled fish, roast pork or a plate of charcuterie. Serve at 10–12°C.
