Robert Weil Monte Vacano Riesling Trocken comes from a half-hectare lieu-dit within the Kiedricher Gräfenberg, revived after lying dormant for a century.

Gräfenberg is the Rheingau grand cru at Kiedrich, and within it the parcel once known as Gräfenberg-Lay occupies one of the steepest sections, at the transition to Turmberg, with the highest concentration of phyllite slate on the hill. The vines are now 40 to 60 years old. Dr Robert Weil bought the site in the nineteenth century with the dowry from his marriage to Emilie von Vacano, and the wine from it, Monte Vacano, was always bottled separately and kept for celebrations rather than sold. After his death in 1921 the practice lapsed and the parcel was folded back into the Gräfenberg bottling. Reviving the custom, the estate whole-bunch pressed the fruit into two refurbished 1,200-litre Stückfässer, fermented wild and left the wine almost two years on lees.

Drinking well now and worth a decade in the cellar; serve at 10-12C with turbot, veal in cream sauce or a Riesling-friendly cheese such as young Comté.
