Description
Rocche Costamagna Barolo del Comune di La Morra DOCG is a Barolo drawn entirely from vineyards inside a single commune, and it says so on the label.
La Morra is the largest of the eleven communes entitled to make Barolo and sits on the western side of the appellation, where Tortonian marl soils tend to give wines that show their shape earlier than those from Serralunga or Monforte. A commune bottling is a middle step between a blended Barolo and a single cru wine: all the fruit comes from one village, so the wine carries that village's stamp without being tied to one vineyard. Rocche Costamagna is a long established La Morra estate with holdings on the Annunziata hillside below the town. Nebbiolo is fermented on skins and then aged in oak and in bottle for at least the period the DOCG lays down, which is more than three years in total.
Serve at around 18°C with braised beef, agnolotti or aged cheeses; a decant helps young bottles, and the wine will hold for a decade or more.
