Description

Clos Romans is a walled Chenin Blanc vineyard in the grounds of an eleventh-century priory at Parnay, farmed biodynamically by Thierry Germain at Roches Neuves.

Saumur Blanc lies at the eastern end of Anjou-Saumur, and Clos Romans sits atop a ridge just outside Saumur on 30cm of sandy clay over the Senonian limestone known as Pierres de Champigny, the same rock quarried to build Château Champigny and cut into the troglodyte cellars below. Germain acquired the site in 2007 and has been replanting steadily at 10,000 vines per hectare, using massale selection so that the vineyard does not deliver a single-dimensional reading of the terroir. The grapes were hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed and fermented in a neutral oval cask, where the wine rested eight months on lees. The estate has been farmed biodynamically for many years.

Give it air or a few more years in bottle; it has a long life ahead. Serve at 10–12°C with roast chicken, scallops or a mature hard cheese.

*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.
