Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Kokerboom 2021

Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Kokerboom is a dry white field blend of Semillon Blanc and Semillon Gris from old vines in Swartland.

Follow the Citrusdal Valley north towards Clanwilliam and you reach the highest vineyard in Eben Sadie's care, named for the striking aloes that grow beside the vines. It went into Table Mountain sandstone in the 1930s and is one of the last remaining old-vine Semillon plantings in the country, from an era when the variety accounted for four fifths of South Africa's vineyard area. Henk Laing owned and farmed it until his recent death, and Sadie has called it one of the most pristine old vineyards he knows: no herbicides, no artificial fertiliser, perfectly pruned for decades, the catch being that it is small and gives almost nothing. Semillon Gris makes up twenty to thirty per cent, picked and pressed together with the Blanc and raised in large-format oak.

Sunlight on this slope ripens the Semillon fully, so there is none of the tart greenness the variety can show: expect ripe lime, chamomile and a waxy, mouthcoating texture with a long saline finish. Serve at 12 degrees. Good with roast chicken, grilled crayfish, or a hard cheese.
