Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Kokerboom 2023

Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Kokerboom is an old-vine Semillon field blend from the Citrusdal Mountain district.

Two dry years in a row in the Citrusdal Mountains led Eben Sadie to pick a little earlier than instinct would suggest, and the 2023 came in at 13.8 per cent alcohol as a result. The vineyard is the highest he works with, planted on Table Mountain sandstone in the 1930s and named for the aloes nearby, and it produced the smallest crop of any site in the District Series that year, a bare sixteen hectolitres per hectare. Semillon Gris contributes between fifteen and twenty-five per cent, picked and pressed alongside the Semillon Blanc and raised together in large-format oak. Eben Sadie asks that what little there is be shared among friends.

Full sun exposure strips out the herbaceous edge, leaving ripe lime, chamomile and a waxy texture with real length. Serve at 12 degrees in a big glass. Roast pork, a bowl of mussels in cream, or aged gouda will all hold their own beside it.
