Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Skurfberg is a dry Chenin Blanc from old bush vines in South Africa's Citrusdal Mountain district.

Citrusdal Mountain is the northernmost wine district in South Africa, arid and remote, on the west bank of the Olifants River. The Skurfberg slopes there are decomposed red sandstone, and the Chenin Blanc growing on them is old, ungrafted and trained as unsupported bush vines, which is increasingly rare anywhere in the world. Eben Sadie built his reputation on tracking down sites like this and treating them plainly: whole-bunch basket pressing, natural fermentation and raising in old wood, with nothing added that would obscure where the wine came from. That such a warm, dry area can still give whites with this much texture and freshness is the puzzle at the heart of the wine.

Dry and broad, with quince, dried pear, honeysuckle and a chalky, saline finish that runs long. Serve at 12 degrees in a large glass. Roast chicken, pork with apple, or a firm aged cheese will all be a good match.
