Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Skurfberg 2020

Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Skurfberg is an old-vine Chenin Blanc from decomposed red sandstone in the Olifants River area.

Old ungrafted bush vines on the Skurfberg give this wine its shape. The slopes are decomposed red sandstone, the district is hot and dry, and yet the whites from here hold onto both texture and acidity in a way that continues to surprise people who know the area. Eben Sadie has drawn on the site for years as part of his series of wines from South Africa's oldest vineyards, and his method does not vary much: whole bunches to the basket press, natural fermentation, old casks and a long, unhurried élevage on lees before blending and bottling from the same wood.

Broad and dry, with baked quince, lemon oil, beeswax and a stony mineral finish. Serve at 12 degrees and let it open in the glass. Good beside roast pork, a mushroom and gruyere tart, or grilled fish with lemon and olive oil.
