Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Skurfberg 2022

Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Skurfberg is a single-vineyard Chenin Blanc from old ungrafted bush vines in South Africa's arid far north.

Citrusdal Mountain sits on the west bank of the Olifants River, further north than any other Cape wine district, and the fruit here comes off Basie van Lill's ungrafted bush vines, planted on decomposed red sandstone between 1940 and 1955. No herbicides, no chemical fertiliser, ever. Eben Sadie rates it among the great Chenin sites anywhere, and what makes it remarkable is that somewhere this warm and dry still gives wine with such texture and cut. Whole bunches go into the basket press, the juice heads straight to old casks for a wild ferment, and after twelve months on lees the blend returns to those same casks and is bottled straight from foudre.

Expect quince, dried pear and beeswax over a salty, stony core, with a long dry finish that keeps building. Serve at 12 degrees in a decent-sized glass. It handles roast chicken, pork belly with apple, or a whole snapper off the barbecue.
