Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Soldaat 2022

Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Soldaat is a single-vineyard Grenache from the Piekenierskloof highlands, north of the Swartland.

Decomposed granite, an east-facing slope at about 780 metres and no irrigation: the site does most of the work here. The vines are 55 years old and ungrafted, and yields sit at 22 hectolitres per hectare. Fermentation and maturation both happen in concrete, with 60 per cent whole bunches, so there is nothing between the fruit and the glass. Eben Sadie has argued for years that this pass is the Cape's best address for Grenache, and the wine backs him up: lifted red fruit, smoke and spice, an earthy undertow, and 13 per cent alcohol.

Perfume first, then a light-footed palate of raspberry, pepper and dried thyme over gentle, sandy tannin. Serve at 15 degrees, or lightly chilled in summer. Try it with grilled lamb cutlets, a herby roast chicken or charcuterie.
