Sadie Family Swartland Columella 2021

Sadie Family Swartland Columella is a red blend that sets out to capture the whole of the Swartland in one bottle.

Six of the seven red grapes permitted in the district go into it, and the 2021 leads with a quarter Syrah, the balance shared between Mourvedre, Grenache, Carignan, Tinta Barocca and Cinsault. Eben Sadie credits the rising share of those last four with the tannin depth and the clearer fruit. Yields are low across eleven parcels, most of them old vines, and seven soil types are represented. After three weeks on skins in a single open fermenter, the wine is basket-pressed to old barrels, spends a year on lees, then moves to seasoned foudres to finish.

Aromatically savoury, with dark cherry, tapenade, pepper and dried scrub, then a long, mineral finish. Give it air and serve at 16 to 18 degrees. It goes with roast lamb, duck confit, or a dish of white beans and sausage.
