Sadie Family Swartland Columella 2022

Sadie Family Swartland Columella is a Syrah-led blend of six Swartland red varieties from eleven old-vine parcels.

Paardeberg, Kasteelberg, Malmesbury and Piquetberg all contribute, across granite, slate, gravel and sandstone, and much of the Syrah grows staked individually in the northern Rhone fashion. A sorting team of twenty-five throws out somewhere between eight and fifteen per cent of the crop before anything reaches the fermenter. Three weeks on skins, a basket press, then French oak barrels with less than five per cent new wood, a year on lees, and a final stretch in seasoned oval casks. The 2022 keeps the fruit purity and the tannin depth Eben Sadie has been chasing with each passing vintage.

Dense but lifted, running through blackberry, olive brine, cracked pepper and dried fynbos to a firm, dusty close. Decant and pour at 17 degrees. Lamb on the barbecue, a rich beef daube or aged Gouda all work.
