Sadie Family Swartland Pofadder 2023

Sadie Family Swartland Pofadder is a pure Cinsault from a 1973 parcel at Riebeeksrivier on the Kasteelberg.

Slate and decomposed shale, bush vines more than fifty years old, and a site that Eben Sadie freely describes as the most demanding he farms. Everything matters: keeping the crop small, sorting bunch by bunch and berry by berry, and shielding the wine from oxygen once it is in the cellar. Whole bunches made up about 30 per cent of the 2023 ferment, which ran a month on skins in an old open-top wooden vat with a daily foot-tread or two, before a tiny basket press moved it to conical casks nearing thirty years of age. Sadie rates it his most stylish yet.

Fragrant and fine-boned, with raspberry, blood orange, white pepper and a dry, lightly grippy finish. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees. It is happy alongside roast quail, veal, or a plate of tomatoes, basil and good olive oil.
