Sadie Family Swartland Treinspoor 2020

Sadie Family Swartland Treinspoor is a varietal Tinta Barocca from bush vines planted in 1974 near Malmesbury.

The grape came to the Cape from the Douro and, spelled the local way with one r and two cs, has become something of a Swartland speciality; it has long propped up the district's red blends, and old dry-grown plantings are now getting attention on their own terms. This block lies four kilometres west of Malmesbury beside a disused railway line, which is where the name comes from, on decomposed granite and sandstone. Thin skins make the variety prone to sunburn, but the old bush vines shade their own fruit. Fermentation is in concrete, then twelve months in large cask.

Eben Sadie hears both northern Rhone and Piedmont in it, and that reads true: blackberry and currant fruit, nettle and spice, florals, and tannin with a grainy Nebbiolo edge. Serve at 16 degrees. Roast beef, duck ragu or a mushroom risotto.
