Sadie Family Swartland Treinspoor 2021

Sadie Family Swartland Treinspoor is a Swartland Tinta Barocca grown on decomposed granite and sandstone.

Portugal's Douro sent this variety south, where it has quietly become a Swartland signature, and the 1974 planting beside the old railway line west of Malmesbury is one of its best homes. Because the skins are thin and burn easily in that light, the sprawling bush-vine canopy matters: it keeps the bunches covered. Half the crop went in as whole bunches for 2021, fermenting in concrete before eleven months in large wooden casks. Eben Sadie describes the style as Piedmontese tannin married to northern Rhone aromatics, which is about as neat a summary as you will get.

Black cherry, grenadine, iodine and crushed nettle, then a long finish on firm, sandy tannin and bright acid. Decant briefly and serve at 16 degrees. Try it with roast lamb, braised oxtail, or aged pecorino and bread.
