Sadie Family Swartland Treinspoor 2022

Sadie Family Swartland Treinspoor is a single-vineyard Tinta Barocca from fifty-year-old bush vines in the Swartland.

Once labelled Tinta das Baroccas, the variety arrived from the Douro and found the Western Cape more than agreeable. Interest in old, dry-grown plantings has climbed steeply in recent years, and this 1974 block, four kilometres west of Malmesbury alongside a disused rail line, is the reference point. Decomposed granite and sandstone underneath, low-trained bush vines above, which shelter the fragile thin-skinned bunches from a punishing sun. The 2022 fermented in concrete with half the fruit as whole bunches, then spent eleven months in large cask. Eben Sadie calls the result idiosyncratic, and he is not wrong.

Aromatic and savoury at once: black cherry, blackcurrant, iodine, dried flowers and a spicy lift, framed by firm tannin. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees after twenty minutes open. Good with roast duck, beef and mushroom pie, or hard cheese.
