Sadie Family Swartland Treinspoor 2023

Sadie Family Swartland Treinspoor is a dry-grown Tinta Barocca from a 1974 parcel west of Malmesbury.

Swartland has claimed this Douro import as its own, and the old railway line the vineyard sits beside gives the wine its name. Decomposed granite and sandstone, bush vines that shade their own thin-skinned bunches against the sun, and no irrigation. Half the 2023 crop went in whole-bunch, fermented in concrete and spent eleven months in large wooden casks, with no new oak anywhere near it. What comes out sits somewhere between the northern Rhone and Piedmont, borrowing aromatics from one and tannin structure from the other, and reads as neither.

Perfumed and firm, with black cherry, blackcurrant, nettle and a briny, iodine edge, closing on dry, granular tannin. Serve at 16 degrees, ideally decanted. Roast lamb, veal shin, or a slow-cooked ragu over pappardelle.
