Sky Zinfandel 2015

Sky Zinfandel is a hillside Zinfandel from dry-farmed vines high above the Napa Valley.

Most of the fruit comes off vines planted in 1999, with a portion from the 1972 block that started the estate. California was four years into drought by 2015, so berries and bunches were small and yields low; picking happened in early September. Fermentation ran ten to fourteen days in open-top vessels with a small proportion of whole berries and a smaller one of whole bunches, after which the wine went through the 1906 hand-crank press that Lore Olds still works with his brother. Fourteen to twenty months in used oak followed, then bottling unfined and unfiltered, and years of cellaring before release.

Sinewy and intense without being big: leatherwood honey, olive, dried herbs and liquorice, with spicy berry succulence against a meaty, peppery savour. Serve at 16 degrees. Slow-cooked beef ribs, grilled quail, or a lamb and olive tagine.
