Spinifex Aglianico 2019

Spinifex Aglianico is a single-vineyard Aglianico from the northern Adelaide Hills.

Caj Amadio's vineyard near Kersbrook sits at 300 metres on quartz clay over granite, and Aglianico is a late ripener at the best of times, later still at that altitude. These are always the last grapes Pete Schell picks, often only days before the season breaks. He rates the match between variety and site highly, and points to what the combination gives him: deep flavour, fresh tannin and high natural acidity, all of which are hard to come by in a warm-climate red. The label is better known for Barossa Rhone varieties, which makes this a useful reminder of the range of Schell's interests.

Firm and savoury, with black plum, sour cherry, tobacco leaf and dried herbs behind substantial tannin and bright acid. Give it air and serve at 17 degrees. It wants something rich: braised beef, lamb ragu, or a hard aged cheese.
