Description
Spinifex Aglianico is a cool-site Australian Aglianico grown at 300 metres in the Adelaide Hills.
Quartz clay and granite near Kersbrook, in the hills north-east of Adelaide, give a long slow ripening period, and this fruit is picked later than anything else Pete Schell handles. For 2020 the grapes were fully destemmed and the wine spent a fortnight on skins, then went into large-format casks, thick-staved demi-muids and stainless steel before bottling unfiltered after ten months to protect the perfume. Beyond a small addition of sulphur dioxide, nothing else went in. The southern Italian variety keeps its acidity even when fully ripe, which is exactly why it works this far from Campania.
Dark and taut, with damson, dried fig, leather and a faint bitterness at the edges, tannin fine but insistent. Decant and serve at 17 degrees. Slow-cooked lamb shoulder, a rich mushroom pasta, or grilled sausages with lentils.
