Spinifex Bête Noir 2022

Spinifex Bete Noir is a medium-bodied Barossa and Eden Valley Shiraz drawn from six old-vine parcels.

Moppa, High Eden, Light Pass and the Eastern Foothills supply the fruit, and the soils shift from thin, skeletal sandy loams up high to sand over red clay on the flats, which is a good part of why the blend works. Vines run from 25 to 110 years, averaging around 45. Whole clusters made up roughly 35 per cent of the 2022, and maturation ran twenty months in French oak from 225 to 4,500 litres with 35 per cent new wood. The model, as always, is the restrained Barossa red of forty and fifty years ago.

A serious wine at a fair price: black and red fruit at the core, aromatic spice and savoury edges, rich and silky but never loose. Serve at 17 degrees. Try it with barbecued lamb, beef short ribs, or a mushroom and lentil pie.
